First things first, it is World Cocktail Day on Monday (13th May). Now, we think it would be rude not to join in on all of the important calendar dates of the year; so, grab yourself a glass and fill it with your favourite cocktail! You can also consider it a good tasting session if you are thinking of having cocktails on your wedding day! We love the idea from a recent bride who is serving ‘his and her’ cocktail ingredients and instructions to her wedding breakfast tables. Each table has a nominated individual who will need to prepare and shake them for the rest of the table. This is a great idea for something fun for the guests to do particularly if not everyone knows one another.
Anyway, moving away from cocktails… this month is all about barns and rustic weddings. Last week we told you how best to style your barn, from large lighting installations to the finer details. This week we’re focussing on one of our favourite barns in the area, the gorgeous Gote Barn in Lewes, East Sussex. With renowned local catering company Circa Events recently taking over the management of the barn, expect to see this barn cropping up on your wedding radar a little more often!
The key details
Day guests: Up to 180 seated guests
Evening guests: Up to 250 guests
Gote Barn is a stunning Grade II listed barn dating back to the 1600’s bursting with rustic charm and elegance. The barn boasts original features giving it a sense of timeless romance and providing the perfect backdrop for your countryside wedding.
The venue comes equipped with 6ft round tables, chivari chairs, a wooden bar perfect for our styling package, outdoor drinks reception space and a raised stage ideal if you are having a live band.
Gote barn is an exclusive use venue, perfect if you’re looking for a private spot for your wedding vows and celebrations.
The lawn is a great versatile space perfect for adding extra seating, fire pits and games; a marquee or temporary structure for additional protection from the rain or sun; and catering delights from Circa Events such as their pizza truck or ice cream bike!
The working dairy and sheep farm has been run by the Craig family for over 75 years, giving the estate a real family feel. Why not make sure that all members of your family are involved… For example give your beloved pooch the big responsibility of walking the wedding rings down the aisle.
Being a working farm, it has got plenty of secret rural spots. They’re perfect for those precious moments where you escape alone together for some photos of you and your newlywed husband or wife!
How to Style the Venue
There are so many ways to approach styling in this stunning venue. Due to the high vaulted ceilings, we recommend adding ceiling work to draw attention to the rustic beams. By doing this, it will also give a cosy feel to the venue. As barns are traditionally darker venues, we generally recommend adding lighting to glisten in your wedding photos. Add a canopy of fairy lights for a twinkly, romantic look or add bright festoon lighting to give a brighter, modern look. Wrap the beams in fairy lights for further lighting throughout the venue.
Choose to hide the band from your wedding guests during the day and add a draped curtain which also acts as a great backdrop for the top table later in the afternoon. Simply pull it back when you are ready for your first dance.
Add a festoon lighting backdrop behind your band. Its these small details that will make all the difference when you get your wedding photos back.
Opt for simple wedding decorations with lots of foliage to complement your surroundings.
The stunning barn doors would look great dressed with either draping and foliage, floral installations or dried hops for an impressive entrance.
Gote Barn sits in the grounds of locally renowned Glyndebourne Estate. Located in the heart of the Downs in the stunning Sussex countryside it is the perfect location for a country wedding in an accessible location. Only a 5-minute drive from Lewes town centre and 20 minutes from Brighton.
This is an amazing venue for having everything and everyone in one place. Dance the night away and take away precious memories from your day together with all your loved ones.
