Why lighting is so important at your winter wedding

The nights are drawing in, our Christmas trees are up and we’re all enjoying evenings in by the fire, finalising those finishing touches for our last few weddings of 2018. The shortest day of the year, Friday 21st December, is fast approaching; and this will coincidentally be our final wedding set-up of the year before the team begins to tuck into the mince pies and mulled wine (as if we haven’t started already…)

There is not a better time of year to focus on lighting for your big day. Both practical and decorative, lighting is one of the key elements that often get’s over looked when organising a wedding. However, here at Not Your Average I Do, it is one of the first, most important parts of the décor that we like to get right. Lighting is important at all times of year, but it is crucial if you are planning a Winter Wedding. We often find that couples will first visit their dream wedding venues in the Spring/Summer and subsequently forget that the sunlight hours will be different. With the sun-setting before 4pm throughout December, you want to ensure you’ve thought of ways to bring some practical and cosy lighting to your day.

Below we have recommended the best ways to bring that added touch of sparkle to your winter wedding as well as featuring some of our favourite lit weddings we’ve created in 2018 for you to add to your wedding mood board:

Festoon Lighting

Festoon lighting is elegant, sophisticated and will look exceptional in the background of your wedding photographs! Our festoon lighting can be hung inside to create stand-out backdrops for your band or stunning ceiling swags. Hung outside it will create a magical ambience on those crisp winter evenings. Either use our shepherd hooks or barrel poles to drape them in open spaces, or hang them in trees to light up the night sky. If you love this look but are looking for something a little different, staggered festoon lighting is a great way to add a modern twist to the popular Pinterest look. We LOVE this look and think it will be a big hit in 2019!

Fairy Lights

Here at NYA HQ we LOVE fairy lights! They are SO versatile – bringing a soft, romantic, twinkly ambience to any venue. You can wrap them around beams or pillars; canopy drape them across the full length of your venues’ ceiling; combine with draping to create a softer look; swag in marquees to add a shimmering ceiling; or use them to create backdrops for your band, the top table or a selfie photo-booth. The possibilities are endless. Outside fairy lights can be used to wrap around trees to create a beautiful feature or act as a cost-effective way to light outside walkways so your guests aren’t walking to the loos in the dark!

Battery Powered Wire Lights

Another thing to bear in mind, not only in Winter, but all year around, is that some venues do not allow you to have candles. Worry not, you can use wired fairy lights to create that twinkly ambience instead. These compact and practical lights are perfect for adding lighting to hard to reach places and where electrical points are hard to find. We add them to our gorgeous baubles to add a romantic element to your table centre, table plan or ceiling decor; put them in our terrariums to create alternative centre pieces; intertwine them in winter foliage; or wrap them around altar backdrops to highlight your ceremony photos.

BAR Letters

Now, if your guests are anything like our friends and family then they’re going to want to know where the bar is. What better way to brighten up a darker venue and point them in the right direction for the booze than with our eye-catching metal BAR letters.

Light up Letters

We believe large light up letters are here to stay! Couples are still wanting to light up their venue with interesting words and phrases to personalise their day; from Mr&Mrs, DANCE, or a wedding hashtag. We have a huge range of free-standing large illuminated letters available for hire to WOW your guests. From ‘LOVE’, ‘I DO’ to your personalised initials. These create perfect backdrops for photos and look amazing on the edge of the dance-floor for a stunning focal point.

The little extras

Although lighting is usually part of the main décor, hung on ceilings and used as backdrops, adding it to the finer details is an effective way of lifting the room and gives your day that extra bit of sparkle. At NYA I Do we have a number of ways you can add an extra bit of romantic glow to your day… Our bespoke light up table plan can be personalised and is Pinterest worthy; our fire pits add warmth and are the perfect addition to a crisp winters evening (especially for toasting marshmallows); and lastly, if you are allowed candles in your venue, then we recommend using candlesticks to make a feature of fireplaces, light up your ceremony aisle with hurricane lanterns and brighten up your wedding breakfast tables with beautiful metallic votives.
